This route begins from the remote village of Monolithos which is situated on the slopes of Mt. Akramytis in southern Rhodes. Mt. Akramytis rises to 823 meters and is the second highest point on the island of Rhodes.
The village of Monolithos is located in a magnificent spot surrounded by raw natural beauty. On one side you have the Mt. Akramytis and its lush slopes and on the other side steep cliffs covered in thick pine forests ending in deep blue Aegean sea. Monolithos' remote location and its bird-eyes view of the forests and the vast sea will definitely make you feel both awestruck and calm.
In Monolithos one can explore the herb scented mountains with breathtaking views - across the sea until the islands of Halki and Alimia.
The hiking route's starting point is located right before you enter the village if you're coming from the village of Sianna. The starting point is marked with two separate wooden signs which have approximately 100m distance between each other. The other one says "Limeri" and the other "Ag. Giannis". Next to the starting point you will find a small parking area. We would recommend to take the route upslope towards "Ag. Giannis". On the way back it is possible to take the "Limeri" path back.
The route's first part is fairly challenging but the views on the route will keep you constantly energized. The path will take you through thick pine forests and sage-scented slopes. Once you pass the most challenging part the upslope paths are pleasant with beautiful surroundings.
Besides the views, this hiking route is especially suitable for botany enthusiasts. The areas surrounding Mt. Attavyros and Mt. Akramytis are known to many rare flower species. Keep your eyes open for orchids and other flower species especially if you're hiking during springtime. Lushy Rhodes in spring time (March-April) is something for all the readers to consider.
The hike's midpoint is approximately at the small church of Ag. Giannis.
From the slopes you will be able to see the neighbouring islands of Halki and Alimia. Alimia is inhabited by a few hermits but Halki is open for visitors all year long.
The bird-eyes view from the top is like no other in Rhodes. In our opinion it is the most gorgeous hike on the island.
The summit of the Mt. Akramytis is at 823m. The duration for the hiking route is approximately 3,5 hours.
This hiking route is straight from a fairytale - most of the route is pleasant and goes through thick pine forests and dreamlike meadows. The first part is slightly challenging but after that it gets easier. At the summit the path is again a bit more challenging. In our opinion the most beautiful hike in Rhodes Greece and definitely a hike to consider if you're into active holidays!
